Project 4: Anacostia Watershed Society

We worked with the Anacostia Watershed Society to construct a streambank revetment.  Basically, it was a bank stabilization project to prevent further erosion and to encourage proper filtration of the water.  (The Anacostia River is extremely polluted, and there is a huge attempt to clean it up).

First, we sorted through a huge mountain of old, donated Christmas trees in order to obtain the ones most suited for the bank.  Then we twined them so that they were more compact and easier to work with (below).

The twined Christmas trees were then placed into a matrix on the streambanks (below).  We pulled them under wires with a nifty tool called a "come-along" (which inspired another one of Holly's original songs).

After the trees were in place, compost was shoveled on top (below).

Below, we have the finished product. Woo-hoo!  The Christmas trees will encourage deposits of sediment that will build up the bank.  The prevention of erosion will lead to a healthy, flowing river, which will speed the cleaning process.
